In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Scarlett Johansson recalls her first meeting with Kevin Feige and her eventual casting as Black Widow. Johansson initially had a general meeting with Feige and Iron Man director Jon Favreau to discuss if there was a place for her in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the time, they were looking to cast Black Widow and Johansson was seriously interested. The initial results of the meeting was that Johansson did not successfully get the role but in fact, was turned down and Emily Blunt was chosen. Johansson recalls the moment she received a call.

“I was visiting my husband at the time at work,” she says, referring to Reynolds. “I remember being in a random hotel somewhere. And I got that call and I was so, so disappointed. And then that was it. You know, life went on. I mean, I’ve certainly had enough experience of rejection.”

Emily Blunt ultimately declined the role due to scheduling problems and Scarlet was offered the role in Iron Man 2.

Johansson also went on to say, “I’m not one to hold a grudge or anything,” she says. “I was super excited about it and I met with Jon again, and we had a funny conversation about how he had not cast me. But I was excited. I was so stoked.”

Johansson would go on to make appearances in Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Captain America: Winter soldier, Avengers Age of Ultron Captain America: Civil War,  Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel, Avengers Endgame, and the yet to be released Black Widow.

Black Widow is set for its theatrical release on May 1st, 2020. The movie is directed by Cate Shortland who has limited directorial credits but most recently directed four episodes of the short lived Showtime comedy, SMILF.
